Would you support a "stoppage" to domestic animal breeding?

This is something that I think about a lot - a moratorium on breeding animals for a period of 6 months a year - or even a year at a time. The purpose of this would be to cut down on the unwanted animal population. It would kind of be like the Zero-population movement, only for animals. What are your feelings on the matter?

  1. Frankly I think it would be a brilliant idea. I have 4 cats who were all rescue cats, 2 were kitten who someone tried to drown at 2 weeks old. I do think that there should be a licensing scheme for breeders & only breeders who are licensed should be allowed to breed animals & with attention paid to ensuring they stay true to the breed to get away from all these over developed highly strung animals that are bred these days. Anyone buying youngstock as pets should be legally required to have them neutered by the time they are 6 months old. If you cant afford to have a pet neutered then you really cant afford to keep it in the first place.
  2. I think its a good idea...however how tight to pull the leash may vary..I have bred and raised wonderful full blood and muttz...however not alot and found homes and get updates...:) but to enact when u just cant breed might be great.....just limit it cuz those "designer" pets r getting out of hand..
  3. From a cat lovers point of view no, it wouldn't work. There are too many people who let their pets have babies because they don't know how early they can mate, say they can't afford to neuter them or are just lazy and irresponsible. These people would continue to let their pets breed and contribute to the unwanted animal population. It isn't responsible cat breeders who are responsible for all the cats in shelters - it's those who just don't get their pet cats neutered and backyard breeders. Those who won't be responsible and neuter their animals now, arent' going to take any notice of a moratorium on breeding animals. Good breeders would not be willing to do that because it's not good for a cat's health to go into heat and not be mated. It causes health problems so breeders would have to neuter all their cats and that may mean some beautiful breeds becoming extinct. You can't just stop breeding them for a year. Or the breed would be left in the hands of backyard breeders which would be worse, imo. A licence for breeders is a good idea, but I'm not sure it wouldn't just push the irresponsible breeders undergound and possibly price good breeders out of breeding. The bad breeders who are in it for the money (and they are the only ones who make money from cat breeding) are already cutting corners and not caring for their cats properly. They may be the only ones who can afford the licence.
  4. Absolutely not! This will not help overpopulation and I do not want anymore government interference in my rights.
